Inversion Tables for Back Pain – I Was Sceptical
Until a while ago I was quite sceptical about the supposed benefits of inversion tables for back pain, but a couple of my family members had varying degrees of daily back pain, and so I decided to take the plunge and buy one.
My thinking was that I would easily spend this much money on one or two visits to a specialist or therapist – and so if inversion therapy didn’t work then I wouldn’t have lost much money, and I could always sell the thing again on eBay.
How they hurt their backs
The two family members that were suffering the lower back pain were my father and my wife. My father had hurt his back years earlier after a friend asked him to help move a washing machine, and in those days they used to put a slab of concrete in the bottom to stop them moving around whilst running. Needless to say when he ended up on the lower side of the stairs bearing the weight of the machine he damaged his back, and had suffered pain on and off for many years afterward.
My wife on the other hand cleans houses for a living, and had been getting varying amounts of back pain after work for the last 2 – 3 years. But the thing that really finished the job of damaging her back was when we visited some friends. My wife loves small children and of course playing with them. She is only 5 foot 5 herself, so only small, and when picking the children up and swinging them around she did the final bit of damage that left her with chronic lower back pain for weeks.
She would lie on the floor crying with the pain, and after a couple of weeks we thought she would have to see a specailist to try to work out how to fix this problem. I had actually hurt my back years ago contorting myself to fit a stereo system in a car dashboard, and after 2 years of mild to strong pain went to a gym for 6 months – which completely fixed my back. This knowledge gave me the idea that we could possibly fix my wife’s pain and hopefully my dad’s pain with some sort of exercise and stretching.
We needed a solution
At this point I started surfing the internet for solutions, and of course inversion tables popped up on the radar. After a bit more research I decided we didn’t have much to lose – and so ordered one.
The first time my wife tried the inversion table we set it to only go to about 15 to 20 degrees, and I must admit it gave her pain to hang there even for just 2 – 3 minutes. She didn’t think that it had helped at first, but when she woke up the next day her pain had definitely reduced from the day before. After using the inversion table for just 3 – 4 days I came home from work one day to have her proclaim that she had spent the entire day without pain!
I was surprised
To tell you the truth I was quite surprised to hear her say this after knowing how much pain she had been in only a few days earlier. I was hoping when I purchased the inversion table that it would work, but really thought it was just a long shot. Well I couldn’t have been more wrong, and frankly I am amzazed at how well this worked, and my wife now raves about her new inversion therapy table to her friends.
I won’t tell you that my wife never gets back pain any more, but it’s usually only after a long day’s work, and is more just muscle soreness than that horrible sciatic pain that runs down the back of your leg. She says that it doesn’t seem to work instantly, but 15 – 20 minutes after inverting the pain just seems to disappear.
And now… my father
Ok, the next test – my father. He had been regularly seeing a massage therapist to stretch out his groin muscles, because one side was tightening and causing one leg to become shorter than the other. He’d had pain for years due to the washing machine incident, and had frequently had to get up at night and sleep on the lounge because his bed was giving him too much pain to sleep in. Well I’m happy to say that he has had similar results to my wife, and he has told me that he can put his head back flat against the inversion table’s cushion, after not being able to straighten his neck properly for years!
Inversion tables for back pain – Ok, I’m sold!
I have been using our inversion therapy table myself since I work at a computer all day in an office, and I find if I lock my fingers together behind my head and then gently stretch from side-to-side that all the vertebrae in-between my shoulders ‘click’ back into place, and it helps relieve that ‘bound up’ feeling.
We have found that daily use for 5 to 10 minutes seems to be enough to keep your body feeling good with greatly reduced, or even no back pain. When you get off the inversion table you always feel taller for a minute – I know it sounds weird, but trust me, once you try for yourself you will see what I mean.
Well I’m sold at this point – inversion therapy really works! That’s when I decided to put this site together because I wanted to share the knowledge and help other people who are getting daily pain and need a way to get lower back pain relief and start feeling good again.
So my advice is to give inversion therapy a try – you should probably speak with your doctor first though if your pain is quite bad. If your’e lucky you may know someone with a machine and you can give it a test run before buying one – or otherwise some therapists have inversion tables for back pain in their offices, so you could try one there.
