The Ironman Gravity 4000 – Possibly the Most Popular Ironman Inversion Table Yet

I’ve been hearing about inversion tables for a couple of years now and how they’re supposed to be this magical cure for any kind of back pain. I saw one at a masseuse’s office once, but it kind of looked like a medieval torture device, so I didn’t try it. Well, a friend of mine started working at a water delivery company, and while he’s really bulked up from it, he complains about his back hurting all the time. So I thought maybe an inversion table would be good for him.

What is an Inversion Table?

Basically, an inversion table is an upright table that you strap on to, and then you turn yourself upside down. The idea is that hanging upside releases the pressure between the discs and stretches all the little muscles that surround and support your spine.

The essential features of an inversion table:

  • The angle of inversion
  • The backrest
  • The ankle straps
  • The frame
  • Installation and storage

Believe it or not, each inversion table has a different combination of features, and whatever table you choose depends on your specific needs. I’m going to explain how each of these features varies on the Ironman Gravity 4000 Inversion Table, and how each of them is important.

Uh, what’s an Inversion Angle?

Ironman Gravity 4000 inversionThe inversion angle will be the key factor in determining what kind of experience you have on the inversion table. Not enough and you’ll just be lying on the table, not relieving any pressure. Too much and you’ll be hanging by your ankles, which can get bruised from the ankle straps, or you can even stretch your spine out too much. This Ironman inversion table has an inversion angle of 90 degrees, which is perfect for most people. You mount the table at around 30 degrees, and then it pivots back to 90 degrees(or less – it’s adjustable). You’re not completely hanging from your ankles, but you’re not lying on your back either. It’s right between staying on and falling off, and it’s the perfect balance between spine safety and stretching.

The Beauty of a Body-Bolstering Backrest

Ironman Gravity 4000 BackrestIf you have lower back pain, lying in a prone position on your back can be very uncomfortable. The arch in your lumbar spine has to support the weight of your lower torso, and it hurts! When you’re lying down, you can put a pillow under your knees to alleviate this pressure, but what do you do when you’re upside down? Well, the folks at Ironman thought of that, and the Gravity 4000 has lumbar support in the form of a removable pillow. So when you’re hanging upside down, your lumbar region will be gently stretched, but not past its capacity. In addition, the backrest on this model is made of memory foam, so every little part of you that sticks out will be cushioned. And it’s all covered in vinyl, so it’s easy to clean. Ankle Clamps That Aren’t Torturous

Ironman gravity 4000 ankle locking systemThe ankle locking system is very important on an inversion table. Ankles are really bony areas, and the clamps are going to support half of your body weight, so they need to be super comfortable and well-fitted. The ankle clamps on the Ironman Gravity 4000 are ergonomic, so they won’t crush your ankle bones or dig into the soft part at the top of your feet. Plus they ratchet shut for a perfect fit, and they can carry 350 pounds. So not only will you not go flying off the table, you’ll actually enjoy being strung up by your ankles. The Ironman Gravity 4000 also features a long handle for releasing the ankle locking system – which means you won’t have to bend right down to your feet to unlock it (unlike some other inversion tables).

Fully Supporting Frame

Ironman Gravity 4000 handlesIf it’s going to support you, and turn upside down, it’s got to be pretty strong. This Ironman table has a steel frame and non-skid rubber feet, so it’s – and you’re – not going anywhere. The height is adjustable up to six and a half feet, and the side handles are covered in nylon so you don’t pinch yourself. And it also has three different angles to start at, so if it’s difficult to strap yourself in at one angle, try another one – it’ll still tilt 90 degrees from the starting angle. The best part is that it’s perfectly balanced, so once you’ve fastened the ankle straps you just lean against the table and raise your arms. The table will gently and automatically tilt backwards. You don’t have to shove yourself over. Just lower your arms to come back up. It’s brilliant.

Installation and Storage

The bad thing about these inversion tables is that they’re kind of big. The Ironman Gravity 4000 is about two feet wide, four feet deep, and five and a half feet tall. The great thing is that it’s foldable, so you can store it easily. When it’s folded it’s taller, but it’s a lot skinnier, so you can slide it behind other furniture. It weighs 75 pounds, which is a little hefty, but nothing unmanageable on a hard floor.
